Boredom Snacking: 5 Things to do instead of mindless eating

I am the queen of “eating for fun” otherwise known as eating when I’m not hungry. I can easily put away half a bag of Oreos while watching a movie, and not even notice. “Who ate all those cookies?” It’s so easy to do, especially when it’s become habitual: watching TV = snack time. Movie = Popcorn. Baseball Game = Hot dogs, nachos, etc.

As with all habits, the secret is to find a better substitute; something you can do instead that gives you the same satisfaction.

Here are the top five things I do to keep me from eating when I’m not hungry:

1. Crafts

I used to be a member of a knitting group. One of the women pointed out to us that knitting was great for losing weight because “you can’t eat and knit at the same time.” If you’re like me, you tend to snack while watching TV or at a sports event or other “sit down and watch” activity. Knitting, crocheting, needlework, or other crafts are perfect substitutes for mindless eating.

2. Reading

Grab a book, magazine, e-reader, or just your phone (audiobooks don’t count) and read something. It will keep you mind, and your hands, busy.

3. Exercise

This doesn’t have to be a full-on workout. I like to grab some weights while I watch TV or even roller skate in my living room for 10 minutes. Take a walk, do a few stretches…anything to get moving. You’d be surprised how a few minutes a day here and there will add up!

4. Housework

Ugh. I know what you’re saying, and I’m with you there, but hear me out. I do not enjoy cleaning at all! (My house reflects this.) When the dishes need doing or a bathroom needs a wipe down, I put on an audiobook, some music, or a podcast and get to work. You can’t eat while cleaning a toilet…at least I hope you’re not.

5. Video Games

Yes, the stereotype of a gamer is someone with a bag of Doritos playing games all day and not exercising. However, I found it very hard to eat while playing anything. Gaming falls into the category for me of keeping my hands busy. I have a portable system so I don’t have to be sitting in front of the TV, a snacking trigger for me, and it keeps my mind busy.
